Healthy and well-cared for teeth. For us something that we take for granted, but in Vietnam this is by far not the case. Here only very few people can afford a visit to the dentist. 84 % of all the children at the age of 6 have cavities in their teeth. Fortunately mouth care is well organised in our shelters. Since 2008 dentists from Dental Clinics have been coming over every year to care for the children’s teeth.
Going to the dentist for the first time
The yearly check-ups and treatments usually take place at the weekend, so the children do not have to miss any lessons at school. The dentists carry out their work in Dr Chang’s Westcoast International Dental Clinic in Ho Chi Minh City. The practice is beautifully furnished and is provided with the necessary equipment. Dr Chang and his team also work together, selflessly and without gain. In this way interim treatment is possible and also emergency service and treatment for pain is organised well.
Petra Blaauboer, dentist at Dental Clinics Eindhoven, met the children for the first time in November 2011. “We were able to treat all the children in conformance with the quality that we offer in the Netherlands. It’s great to see how positive these children are in life. When they have been in the orphanage, they do not yet know what they can expect from us. You see, they come to visit the dentist for the first time.”
At the table with a smile
During the first visit to the dentist profound procedures often take place. A lot of attention is also paid to prevention and mouth hygiene. “It’s lovely to see the improvement with the children whose teeth have been treated by Dental Clinics for many years. And in the evening everyone was sitting at the table with a big smile. One of the first inhabitants of the Sunlight Kids house prepared a delicious meal for everyone there. This orphaned boy is now a qualified chef and lives independently.”
